Good morning, Corvallis. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The South Corvallis Food Bank is struggling to meet rising hunger as SNAP cuts and a 20% reduction in USDA food items force the center to pay for key supplies—such as milk—from its own budget. Long wait times have increased and the bank is considering adding service days to serve more households in need.  KGAL
  • Today, the Corvallis Farmers’ Market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1st St and Jackson Ave—while local museums and venues host art exhibits, music performances, and community gatherings from Friday through early September. Residents have options including the Put a Bird on It! Finley, Feathers and Fashion exhibit at the Corvallis Museum and other events highlighting local art and culture.  The Corvallis Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Back in May 2024, Oregon State University and the Mockingbird Foundation co-hosted the Phish Studies Conference that gathered scholars from many fields — on Tuesday the foundation released a free archive of 19 videos with analysis of Phish’s music and fan culture.  The Corvallis Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • OSU Robotics Club won first place at the Canadian International Rover Challenge held in early August in Alberta, Canada. The team beat 25 other college teams—this win is their second international first place in seven years.  The Corvallis Advocate

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stella-Jones pleaded guilty on August 25 to 10 misdemeanor charges for polluting the South Yamhill River with pentachlorophenol from its Sheridan wood treatment facility — a Superfund site that supplies drinking water for nearly 6,000 residents. The company agreed to pay up to $250,000 in fines and will upgrade its stormwater treatment system to clean a contaminated drainage ditch.  The Corvallis Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal appeals court on Tuesday reinstated a paused Oregon law that requires drug companies to report price changes for prescriptions costing more than $100 a month — the move reversed a February ruling and has support from state officials and 21 state attorneys general who say the law will help show how prices rise. The decision is seen as a win for efforts to bring more transparency to drug costs for Oregonians.  Philomath News
  • The Corvallis City Council will review an Investment Resolution Analysis on Tuesday, September 2 as concerns grow that the proposed BDS resolution will restrict corporate investment options, lower returns, and create legal risks. The report by finance director James D. Inglis outlines options to maintain the current ESG framework — or adjust it with additional AFSC criteria to reduce risks.  The Corvallis Advocate
