CULTURE NEWS

  • Last week, the traveling Wall That Heals—a 375-foot mobile replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial—stopped in Independence, one of 31 cities on its 2025 tour. Local Philomath alumnus Ric Schoonover and his wife visited to honor fallen veteran Paul Cochran, whose legacy includes a scholarship at Philomath High School.  Philomath News
  • The Majestic Theatre finished a $246,500 renovation—funded mainly by the Starker Family—and reopened with The Great Gatsby on Sept. 26 after contractors completed the work by Sept. 15. The refurbished venue now shows its historic 1913 style while sporting new seats and carpet.  Corvallis Gazette-Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Stacker compiled gas price statistics as of Sept. 26, showing Oregon’s regular gas price at $4.21—a 1.1% drop from last week and a 14.3% rise from last year—while diesel stood at $4.48 with minimal weekly change. The data also shows that Corvallis had a regular price of $4.04, making it the seventh most affordable among Oregon metros.  Philomath News

  • Hailey Francisco, a marine studies student at OSU, portrayed Benny and Bernice for three years at sports and campus events—she developed a capstone project to explain ocean acidification and now works as a collegiate development consultant for Delta Gamma as she plans to return to a marine career in the Pacific Northwest.  The Corvallis Advocate

FINANCE NEWS

  • A report released Thursday by Truth in Accounting found that 25 states could not cover all their bills at the end of fiscal year 2024—while Oregon had extra funds, it faced risks from a tax refund and possible loss of federal funding. The analysis compared $2.2 trillion in assets with $2.9 trillion in debts and urged more transparent state accounting.  Philomath News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corvallis School District and City officials announced a meeting at Linus Pauling Middle School on Monday, September 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to review an engineering report estimating $5.9 million in repairs for Osborn Aquatic Center after corrosion forced its indoor pools to close last September — state funding of $4 million has been secured while further budget challenges remain.  The Corvallis Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 111,000 Oregonians buying marketplace health plans will face significantly higher premiums in 2026—up to a 75% increase on average—and nearly 35,000 will lose financial help if Congress does not extend the enhanced tax credits; lawmakers are still debating while enrollment for ACA plans begins in November.  Philomath News
  • Samaritan Health Services will host a drive-thru flu shot clinic on Oct. 4 in Corvallis at 2555 NE Belvue St.—the clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and vaccinate adults and children 6 months and older without appointments while billing insurance for the service.  Philomath News
  • Today, OSU researchers led by professor Richard van Breemen found that edibles labeled as magic mushrooms sold in smoke shops contain no psilocybin but instead include substances such as caffeine, hemp, and kava extracts—raising public health concerns for consumers.  The Corvallis Advocate
