COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Philomath High, the cellphone ban has improved classroom focus and social interaction—teachers report nearly full compliance while a few parents expressed quiet concerns, and Citizens Academy sessions now welcome drop-in participants with meetings set for Oct 23 and Oct 30. Last weekend, the Great Pumpkin Run featured 10K, 5K and 1K races with a fun costume contest, and today Lilly’s Lope for Hope is held at City Park.  Philomath News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oregon State University reported a record enrollment of 38,460 students this fall — with 25,374 in Corvallis and 9,012 new first-year students — as figures show increases in transfer, online, and diverse enrollment.  The Corvallis Advocate
  • The Corvallis school board listened to feedback from community members and the superintendent and concluded that additional school closures might be needed—official proposals are under review. Further decisions will depend on continued community input.  Corvallis Gazette-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oregon State University researchers found that a large quake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone may trigger tremors on the San Andreas Fault Zone that could hurt cities like Portland and San Francisco. The study compared old underwater landslide layers and comes after Gov. Tina Kotek ordered new earthquake safety measures in early September.  The Corvallis Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Benton County commissioners approved a grant up to $100,000 for improvements at the Osborn Aquatic Center, which is managed by the city and school district for community swim meets and family recreation. The county made this investment despite tight budgets to help the center continue serving local residents — a critical community resource.  KEZI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Philomath High won 27 to 21 in its homecoming game against Junction City on Friday night, with a 100-yard kickoff return and key defensive stops setting the tone for the win. The Warriors overcame four turnovers and 151 penalty yards—ensuring a firm victory and now will focus on their next game against Marist Catholic.  Philomath News
