Good morning, Corvallis. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kings Valley residents gathered at the Community Hall last Sunday to mark the community’s 170th anniversary — longtime resident Kevin Collins recalled his early memories and how he chose the rural life after a visit with Ron Anderson. The celebration featured a potluck, music by the Root Vegetables, and a tribute to six local soldiers lost in World War II — a clear reminder of the town’s proud history.  Philomath News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oregon schools will soon have more than a year to plan summer learning programs after the state Senate passed two bills—House Bill 5047, which funds $35 million for summer 2025, $35 million for summer 2026, and $12 million for June, and House Bill 2007, which sets rules for the programs—and they now await Gov. Tina Kotek’s signature. The funding will be used only for programs that help students read and write at grade level as the Oregon Department of Education gives priority to schools with low reading scores.  Philomath News
  • Stephanie Lunceford (a GAPS school board candidate) worries about rising student anxiety and says her experience raising children on different school paths gives her a unique view of educational challenges. She believes this perspective will influence her future decisions on the board.  Corvallis Gazette-Times
