ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in the local area increased by 9 cents over the last week, with regular gas now at $4.87 as of April 27 and diesel at $6.21 compared to an Oregon average of $5.07. Data from Stacker using AAA numbers show a 31% year increase in gas prices.  Philomath News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PHRED will host its annual mattress and rummage sale at Philomath High School on May 2–3 to raise funds for its robotics program. The mattress sale runs Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and the rummage sale runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Philomath News
  • Cal Young Middle School teacher Sara Connors was named TechStart's K-8 Technology Teacher of the Year for her work in a unified STEAM classroom. She will receive $1,000 to support projects like Lego robotics + engineering challenges and be honored at a state tech awards event next month.  KEZI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The South Fork McKenzie River restoration will start early May to reconnect 335 acres of historic floodplain (boosting water quality and fish habitat) along a 1.8-mile stretch near Blue River. Agencies and local partners have begun preliminary site work with construction set to continue until early September.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Benton County and ODOT held an open house at Letitia Carson Elementary School on April 28 to share progress on two bike and pedestrian bridge plans in north Corvallis. Residents can review project information online until May 15.  KEZI

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Philomath boys volleyball team lost in four sets to Western Christian on Monday evening at Philomath HS, dropping their Special District 3 record to 3-6 while Western Christian will face league leader Cascade at 6 p.m. today and Philomath’s Titan Tournament schedule for Saturday in West Salem was released.  Philomath News
  • Philomath High finished sixth at the Oregon West Conference match held Monday, Apr. 27 at Cross Creek Golf Club in Dallas — the Warriors will play next on May 4 at Diamond Woods Golf Club in Monroe.  Philomath News
