COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The seventh annual Amazing Grange Day will take place Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the historic Marys River Grange Hall in Philomath and will feature a rummage sale and pie auction that aims to raise funds for planned kitchen renovations. Judy Hays-Eberts said the event is the organization’s largest fundraiser this year.  Philomath News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers are needed to collect Oregon ash seeds in a conservation effort led by the USDA Forest Service and Oregon State University to protect native ash from the emerald ash borer — a pest that has devastated ash elsewhere. A virtual workshop is held today from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. to train participants, and seeds will be sent to the Dorena Genetic Resource Center in Cottage Grove.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Benton County will review an appeal filed by Republic Services after the Planning Commission denied their Coffin Butte Landfill expansion request — the appeal includes a 60-day extension that moves the deadline to November 26. A public hearing will be held in late October with online participation available.  KEZI
  • At an open house on Aug. 12, Corvallis officials presented funding ideas including higher local taxes, bonds and public—private partnerships to finance a planned $200 million combined city hall and police headquarters while some residents voiced strong doubts about the proposals.  Corvallis Gazette-Times
  • Republic Services appealed the county planning commission’s denial to expand the Coffin Butte Landfill by filing its appeal Tuesday and receiving a 60-day extension—officials said the Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing in late October. The appeal is the final stage in a process that began when the company first submitted its expansion application.  Philomath News
