EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Oregon State University’s human-powered submarine team—led by senior Liam Vincent—built the vessel Castorea in a college makerspace and raced it at the 18th International Submarine Races in Maryland in June, passing all inspections and winning a Smooth Operator award. The 15-student team plans to build on this success for future competitions. The Corvallis Advocate
- ➤ Linn-Benton Community College released its summer term honor roll list that includes five students from Philomath — Caitlin Bland, Chris Buchfink, Hannah De Mello, Michael Shklayvel, and Nathan Yogues. To achieve the honor roll, students earned a 3.5 GPA for 12 or more graded credits completed from June to August. Philomath News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, nearly 80% of the Northwest is in drought with over half of the area in severe or extreme conditions because Oregon received only half of its normal spring rain—raising concerns for wildfire safety and agriculture. State climatologist Larry O’Neill noted Oregon had its fourth-driest period since record keeping began in 1895. Philomath News

- ➤ CVS reversed its course and now requires a prescription for COVID vaccines (online appointments are not available and patients must walk in). State pharmacy officials will provide more details after the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting on Sept 18-19 (further changes in vaccine access may follow). Philomath News

- ➤ The Philomath High girls won first place and the boys finished second at the Country Fair Classic on Sept. 10 in Veneta. The girls had three top-10 finishers while senior Leo Pausch was the best on the boys side with a time of 16:46.3. Philomath News
