Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of September.
Good morning, Corvallis.
Fall Festival events will close Monroe Avenue between 8th and 6th Street from Friday, September 26 to Monday, September 29 at noon and bus routes are set to follow detours directing passengers to the Downtown Transit Center — including Inbound Routes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 50 and the Philomath Connection.
Marys River Grange No. 685 will host a Summer Night Rodeo Round-Up dance event Friday, Sept.
26 from 7-11 p.m. at the Yew Wood Corral at the Philomath Frolic and Rodeo Grounds. The fundraiser will feature country dancing, competitions, and four dance lessons with an entry fee of 15 dollars and an additional fee of 10 dollars for contest participants—proceeds will help refinish the historic Grange hall floors and no alcohol is allowed.
The Friends and Foundation of the Corvallis—Benton County Public Library will hold its annual Fall Festival Book Sale this weekend from Friday through Sunday, Sept.
26 to 28 at the library on 645 NW Monroe Ave adjacent to Central Park, where proceeds support library activities in Alsea, Corvallis, Monroe and Philomath. Donor hours on Friday from noon to 3 p.m. —offering early entry— will be available before general sales end at 5:30 p.m.
Corvallis councilors discussed changing public comment procedures at recent meetings where comments sometimes lasted over an hour, and they considered proposals like splitting the session so speakers sign up in advance or drop in later.
Mayor Charles Maughan said he wants to manage comments without harshness and will continue the discussion at the Oct. 9 work session.
The budget approved in June already shows a $10 million gap as Finance Director Inglis compared the city's financial challenge to a struggling coffee shop—councilors will meet next month to review cuts, revenue options and service fee changes.
This shortfall forces tough choices as revenues do not keep pace with rising costs.
Philomath High's volleyball team beat Sweet Home 25—19, 25—11, and 25—14 in a conference opener on Tuesday, Sept 23, with senior Taylor Hudson leading the team with strong serves and kills.
The win extended the Warriors' six-game streak in the longstanding rivalry, and the team will travel to Stayton for their next match on Thursday.
