EDUCATION NEWS

  • Erin Gudge, a member of the Philomath School Board, stepped down as chair Tuesday evening after complaints over a Facebook post about the death of Charlie Kirk. She remains on the board and a new chair will be chosen at 7 p.m. Thursday — the board formally censured her for the remarks.  Philomath News
  • Philomath High School science teacher Len Cerny—who began teaching in 1992—shared his story of shifting from railway engineering to the classroom and his passion for making science come alive for students.  Philomath News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Republic Services will pick up leaves from Corvallis streets once a week from October 20 until the week of December 22 as part of the City’s Fall Leaf Collection Program. The City also set up four free leaf drop-off sites—Dr. MLK, Jr. Park, Pioneer Park, 2392 NW Garyanna St, and Crystal Lake Sports Park—and will expand street sweeping every two weeks.  City of Corvallis

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Monday's City Council meeting, Ward 5 Councilor Ellis announced she will not run again and called for extra training on System Development Charges—she noted her past struggles with SDCs and the council passed the motion 7 to 2. Mayor Maughan said he opposes Republic Services' push to expand the landfill and warned that the decision rests with higher boards—City Manager Mark Shepard’s review will move forward via a request for proposal as locals buzz about a new Chick-fil-A promotion and a Starbucks closure.  The Corvallis Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Myriam Cotten of OSU led a study that showed antimicrobial peptides damage bacteria by forming larger, longer-lasting pores in their membranes. Lab tests and computer work produced a new equation that may guide future treatments against antibiotic resistance — a growing global threat.  The Corvallis Advocate
