COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, with federal SNAP funds halted due to a government shutdown, the City of Corvallis has set up food donation drop boxes at sites like City Hall and the public library—Benton County is also sharing phone and online resources to help residents find local food pantries until benefits resume.  The Corvallis Advocate

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents will learn about fungi and explore the fall forest at Beazell Memorial Forest’s annual Mushroom Day on Sunday, November 9, where workshops, guided trails, crafts and cooking demos will be held at the Education Center. Registration costs $15 for in-city residents (families get a discount on additional members) and a free shuttle from Avery Park will serve registered attendees.  Philomath News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corvallis school closures will cut about 18 full-time equivalent jobs — a decision that affects not just campus staff — and will impact the broader school system.  Corvallis Gazette-Times
  • Philomath schools are hosting Veterans Day programs beginning Friday with guest speakers and musical performances at the middle, elementary, and primary schools—an additional program on Monday at the high school will feature a former Navy chief and provide lunch for veterans, with all schools closed for classes on Nov. 11.  Philomath News
  • The Benton County Genealogical Society will host a free genealogy program by Brent Bunker at Philomath Museum on Saturday, November 8, with a members meeting at 10:30 a.m. and the talk at 11 a.m.—Bunker will share his 50 years of research and travel experiences visiting ancestral homelands.  Philomath News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lebanon Fire District secured a $1 million grant from the USDA Forest Service to enhance wildfire prevention, seasonal staffing, equipment upgrades, and community outreach. The project will begin in 2026—showing strong local collaboration—aiming to protect at-risk areas.  KEZI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Benton County Board approved the Coffin Butte Landfill expansion in a 2 to 1 vote and added conditions including a 1.3 million ton waste limit and paid full-time monitoring by Republic Services—Commissioner Shepherd voted against the plan. Staff will write the final order and set a hearing for Monday, Nov. 17 where appeals may follow.  The Corvallis Advocate
