If you live in Corvallis, your City Council is about to look different. Measure 2-159 is passing with about 58% in preliminary results. The charter amendment creates a six-person council, with one councilor from each of six wards, on staggered four-year terms.

“I'm pleased that a strong majority of voters in Corvallis were motivated by a desire to bring city government in to the 21st century.”

Council President Tony Cadena

The mayor's race isn't settled. In Tuesday's first count, Mayor Charles Maughan had 7,545 first-choice votes (45.5%) to Andrew Struthers' 6,316 (38.1%). Nobody had a majority, so ranked-choice tabulation will decide it.

  • Ward lines: staff will redraw boundaries through a public process
  • New councilors: at least six take office in January 2027
  • Turnout in first count: 65.46% of 61,355 registered voters
  • Late ballots: counted if postmarked by Election Day, arriving within seven days

No mayoral candidate has a majority of first-choice votes

Oregon's extreme heat and smoke days have climbed since 2006, a state report finds

A new report puts numbers on hotter, smokier years. Oregon averaged 22 extreme heat days a year from 2021 through 2025, up from 12 in 2006 through 2010. Smoke days tripled, and days with both quadrupled.

Rural counties in eastern, central and Southern Oregon saw the most extreme heat days. Smoke days rose fastest in the state's biggest population centers.

“Our big hope is that these numbers validate the need to take action.”

I am not an "ALL CAPS" type of lady, but this message is to the woman who clipped the child on his bike at the corner of Buchanan and 11th at 8am, YOU HIT A CHILD ON A BIKE!

“YOU SHOULD HAVE PULLED YOUR CAR OVER AND PROPERLY CHECKED TO MAKE SURE HE WAS OKAY, NOT JUST LOOK THROUGH YOUR WINDSHIELD AND ASK "You okay?" AND THEN DRIVE OFF WHEN HE NODDED! The child was obviously in shock because you had just hit him. That intersection is crazy at 8 am, I understand, but anyone driving through…”

The Wrap

Corvallis gets its name from a Latin compound meaning "heart of the valley," and one thrift shop there has a cat lounge. The Cat's Meow, at Northwest Lincoln Avenue and Northwest Kings Boulevard, has the Whiskers Cat Lounge, and purchases there directly benefit Heartland Humane care efforts. Thrifting with a kitten nearby sounds purr-fect.
